This sandwich, with almost two centuries of history, was revitalized and popularized worldwide by Cuban exile in Florida with original elements and others taken from American cuisine. The result is an eclectic sandwich that, with the exception of some ingredients, can be reproduced in most kitchens in the world.
The Cuban sandwich contains swiss emmental cheese (the one with holes), smoked cooked ham, shredded roast pork, pickled gherkins and a soft sauce of mayonnaise and mustard, all enclosed in a characteristic Cuban bread that is roasted in the pan.
INGREDIENTS (for 1 Cuban sandwich):
1 cuban bread (if not available, use a long, soft and wide bread or look the video below to learn how to make your own cuban bread)
8 slices of swiss emmental cheese
8 slices of smoked cooked ham
50 grams (1.7 oz) of shredded roast pork
2 large pickled gherkins cut into thin longitudinal strips
4 tablespoons mayonnaise
4 tablespoons sweet mustard
The amounts listed are approximate, so take them as a reference. For some they will be short, for others it will be too much.
First we mix mustard and mayonnaise in equal parts.
Open the bread and spread both inner faces with the mixture of mayonnaise and mustard.
Then we put the sliced cheese on one of the leaves, until it covers the entire surface. On top of the cheese layer we put the cooked ham.
Next, we place the shredded roast pork that we have previously heated in the microwave or at the pan. You must cover the entire surface of cooked ham with the shredded roast pork.
Top with the pickles in thin and longitudinal slices. On top of the pickles if we want we put more cooked ham and finish with slices of cheese. Cover all this with the other half of bread.
In a pan we pour a little butter, over medium heat. We place the sandwich with a weight on top - it can be a plate, another pan - until it is roasted. With 1 minute or 2 should be enough. We turn around and repeat the action. In this way the cheese will melt.
It should be eaten hot. It is a superlative snack, at the first bite you will realize.
