The first income that American children make is usually achieved as we have seen repeatedly in Hollywood movies by making and selling lemonade. It is an activity typical of the summer period that does not need any type of permission and through which children start in the "business" world in a way that is looked upon with sympathy and benevolence by adults, just like the "trick or treat " of Halloween. In fact, lemonade is the "unofficial" drink of America together with the sweet tea in the south.
Each glass of lemonade is sold to the passerby for a variable price between 5 and 15 cents (a few cents of a euro) and in the same way that there is no standard price, it cannot be said that there is a unique recipe. There are often serious discussions about the correct way to prepare lemonade. I don't know if this is the best recipe but it certainly tastes sweet and refreshing, which is what matters.
INGREDIENTS (to prepare just over 1 liter / 5 cups of lemonade)
- 1 cup of water
- 1 cup of sugar
- 6 lemons
- 3 or 4 cups of ice water
- Ice (to taste)
- 1 lemon cut into slices
In a saucepan we pour a glass of water and heat. When it is about to boil, pour in the sugar and stir until it dissolves completely. We remove from the fire and reserve. Let it cool, adding some drops of lemon juice.
We squeeze the 6 lemons - which make a cup of juice, more or less - and pour it into a large jug. Add the syrup that we have prepared and shake well. Next we add 3 or 4 glasses of cold water - according to the acidity that we want for the lemonade -, the ice and a whole lemon cut into slices. It is served very cold
